The Hyundai i30 made quite a splash when it landed here in 2007. With appealing looks, impressive quality, good road manners and safety it swept the Cars Guide Car of the Year judges off their feet. The win in the prestigious annual award was historic in many ways. It was not only the first for Hyundai, but also the first for a Korean carmaker
For comparison the Subaru’s 2.0-litre engine is claimed to use 6.6L/100km and the Corolla will do less again with it’s 1.8-litre unit scoring a claimed 6.1L/100km. The 2.0-litre non-turbo petrol produces 120kW/203Nm. Where the Hyundai does truly shine is the unreal locally-tuned suspension.
You can choose from three petrol engines and one diesel in an i30. The most fuel-efficient is the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel available in the i30 Go, Active, Elite and Premium. It consumes 4.7 litres/100km on the official test (city and country combined) with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT).
At least fuel use averages fall below 5.0L/100km. Hyundai should also be commended for pricing its diesels from just $23,590. With leading warranty/aftersales underpinning its good looks inside and out, the improved i30 from $20,990 remains on top of the averages. However, against A-grade stars like the Golf, this Hyundai is still a C proposition.
Considering its 18bhp power deficit over the Peugeot 308 GT, you’d expect superior fuel economy and lower emissions – but the i30 Turbo only manages 38.7mpg and emissions of 169g/km of CO2
The Premium Diesel runs a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 100kW at 4000rpm and 300Nm from 1750-2500rpm with the DCT (Hyundai’s name for DSG) our test car was
